About the organisation

The Australian Indigenous Governance Institute (AIGI) is an Indigenous-led national center specialising in governance, knowledge and excellence. AIGI support the economic, social and cultural aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by connecting them with world-class governance practice, research, thought leadership and educational resources.

AIGI is governed by a Board of Directors and the role will be required to undertake research and development projects as directed by the CEO. The Research will collaborate with the Australian National University and other stakeholders.


About the role

This position will report to the CEO of AIGI and will have a supporting role to AIGI’s research and governance activities. Specifically, the role encompasses the following responsibilities:

  • Support and undertake research activities and projects under limited supervision either as a member of a team, or where appropriate, independently.
  • Develop position papers including literature reviews; discussion papers; conference proposals; and contribute to the production of conference and seminar papers.
  • Support AIGI’s advocacy strategy, identifying opportunities for AIGI input and submission including to government and other enquiries.
  • Undertake professional development activities including, attendance at conferences and seminars relevant to the strategic objectives of AIGI;



About you

You will be seen as an ‘up and comer’ in terms of your leadership potential, and your ability to work with limited supervision. You will exude initiative and competence and be able to show your knowledge of research systems and governance. You will be passionate about the work in this sector, bringing to the role a deep understanding of the ATSI culture.


This role will attract highly organised people with a bent to planning, monitoring, reporting and managing priorities, especially in a research and academic setting.


To be successful in this role you will be familiar with the academic culture, articulate and energetic.  You will bring with you a wealth of knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal cultures, and a proven ability to engage with Traditional Owners and build Aboriginal community capacity.
