About the organisation 

Lowitja Institute is Australia’s only national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled health research institute, named in honour of its patron, the late Dr Lowitja O’Donoghue AC CBE DSG. It is working for the health and wellbeing of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by facilitating high-impact quality research and knowledge exchange, and by supporting a new generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health researchers. Established in January 2010, Lowitja Institute operates on key principles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership, a broader understanding of health that incorporates wellbeing, and the need for the work to have a clear and positive impact. 

About the role  

The Executive Manager of Research and Knowledge Translation at Lowitja Institute collaborates closely with the Deputy CEO to advance research outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. You will initiate and manage strategic research projects and consultancies to deliver Lowitja Institute’s current and future research agenda, whilst strengthening collaborations and partnerships to ensure results. You will lead Lowitja Institute’s research governance development, implementation and build internal capacity in this area.

The Executive Manager Research and Knowledge Translation will contribute to the shaping and achievement of the annual Lowitja Institute’s Business Plan, which contributes to achievement of the Strategic Plan. The position will also lead Lowitja Institute’s research governance development and implementation and build internal capacity in this area.

About you 

You are driven to improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You excel as both an independent worker and an effective team member. With a high level of self-motivation, you consistently produce high-quality work. You have strong administration and organisational skills, enabling you to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines. You also understand cultural safety in an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander context and can contribute to a culturally safe environment. 

Key Selection Criteria 

  • A strong understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, wellbeing and culture with the ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.   

  • Proven high level knowledge, skills and experience of how research contributes to solutions and benefits for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  

  • Demonstrated track record in research governance, knowledge translation and project management.  

  • High level negotiation and executive leadership skills with experience supervising and collaborating with a variety of personnel. 

  • Innovative in determining best methods of knowledge translation for maximum impact with identified audiences. 

  • Proven high level written and oral communication skills with the demonstrated ability to effectively network, liaise, and interact with individuals from various backgrounds and roles. 

Key Requirements 

  • Working with Child and Working with Vulnerable Peoples Checks (or state/territory equivalent) 

  • Tertiary Qualifications required. 

  • PhD Highly Desirable. 

  • The ability to undertake interstate and international travel and work out of hours.
