About the organisation
First Nations Advocates Against Family Violence (FNAAFV) was established in May 2012 and is the national Peak body for community-controlled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations around Australia that provide legal and other holistic and culturally safe services to First Nations people affected by family violence – predominantly First Nations women and their children.

About the role
Reporting directly to the CEO, this position will provide high level executive business functions and deliver on strategic projects that contribute to FNAAFV to fulfill its goals. The Strategic Director will be responsible for strategically supporting the team in their roles of policy development, stakeholder engagement, sector development, and membership support to achieve our current Strategic Plan objectives. Our main strategic priorities include the following:
  • Lift our profile to be a go-to organisation for domestic and family violence impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Influence policy, funding, legal and non-legal reforms to support better outcomes in our communities.
  • Support our members to do their critical work in community.
  • Strong Governance.
This position will also require you to step in and support the CEO when she is travelling and may require media presence.

About you
To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will be an experienced senior leader with a proven ability to exercise independent judgment and deliver high-quality work under limited supervision. You will have experience in executive support, project delivery, and a strategic approach to achieving organisational goals. You will be skilled at building and maintaining strong relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including government bodies and community organizations, to influence policy development and inform strategic initiatives. Your leadership will be pivotal in providing guidance and support to the CEO and team, ensuring effective implementation of policies and procedures. You will be proactive and be able to think critically and strategically, with a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the sector. This role requires someone with a combination of high-level leadership, strong communication and negotiation skills, and a commitment to supporting the cultural and operational goals of the organisation.

Key Selection Criteria
  • Demonstrated high level leadership and skills, including the ability to effectively delegate and manage competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated relationship/partnership development capability, including exceptional stakeholder engagement, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Experience in complex end-to-end project management, in relation to a social services framework with client centric focus and outcomes.
  • Demonstrated background in developing/implementing techniques, methodology, work practices and procedures in all facets of work areas within a case management practice.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with capabilities to prepare and present reports/ submissions for Executive / Board and funding body.
  • Deep understanding and demonstrated experience working with clients affected by transgenerational trauma, vicarious trauma, and the impact of history on today’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander society, including ability to develop and access systems of self-care.
Key Requirements
  • Holder of a current open Australian driver’s license.
  • Complete a National Police Check. Note: An International Police Check will also be required if you have resided continuously in an overseas country for 12 months or more in the last ten years.
